Recent employers of the program’s graduates include Apple, Google, Amazon, Anthropologie, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Southern California Institute of Architecture (SciArc), Guess, Metro, and Capitol Records. Students achieve the highest level of design excellence through critiques, reviews, and workshops. Strong craft and presentation skills are emphasized throughout. The Graphic Design Program at CalArts fosters the next generation of graphic designers through rigorous inquiry, fearless exploration and innovative making. Students learn to articulate a critical and theoretical perspective and develop graphic design skills, including UX/UI, typography and type design, storyboarding and designing motion sequences, and printmaking and traditional letterpress. Typical formats include branding and logo development, posters, books, package design, apps, websites, and interactive design. Best of all, they are reusable, so if you decorate in a dorm or apartment you can take them with you and never leave behind a sticky residue. Art Deco, short for the French Arts Dcoratifs, and sometimes referred to simply as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design. The College also offers an Advertising Design minor. WallPops removable wall decals and stickers make stylish décor simple. The other area of emphasis is Illustration. A total art style, Art Nouveau design has impacted other powerful movements like Art Deco. As one of two areas of emphasis offered in the Communication Arts program, Graphic Design challenges students to research, develop, and refine projects that combine image-making and typographic form in order to communicate visually in meaningful ways across a wide variety of media.
